The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has released a report indicating that coordinated efforts to tackle air pollution and the climate crisis could expand the global economy by 4.5 percent by 2050, according to thecable.ng.
The findings, reported by thecable.ng, suggest that such measures would not only yield economic benefits but also prevent a significant number of premature deaths. Premium Times Nigeria, citing the same report, notes that action on climate and clean air could avert 144 million premature deaths by mid-century.
The report places particular emphasis on South Asia, where the economic toll of air pollution is severe. Down To Earth reports that UNEP estimates the region’s pollution burden is equivalent to 10 percent of its GDP. The report outlines 25 potential solutions for the area, which it says could offer returns of 21 to 1 on investment.
